How Can I Help?

Individual Tutoring Sessions

While most of my classroom experience has been with high schoolers, I have tutored everyone from an 8-year-old boy who was determined to build a rocket and asking questions his parents couldn’t answer to a PhD candidate in medical research. Sessions can be in person or remote. Making remote learning feel personal and interactive is something I have really worked on since 2020. Fill out a contact form and let’s see if I can help!

AP Science Test Prep

Getting that 4 or 5 is completely achievable! Specifically for those looking to excel on those AP tests, let’s come up with a plan and work through it together. Students that I have helped one-on-one with AP classes have gone on to do well in college at schools including Dartmouth, Brown, Columbia, Northeastern, Tulane, and Wisconsin. Let’s chat about your personal success plan and make it happen together!

Project Assistance

Looking to try something new and not sure where to start? Having problems unlocking your creative potential? Have a wacky idea that you are trying to flesh out? If you are looking for help, let’s chat - I am always looking for new challenges and have a broad range of experiences and skills that may help. Who? Why? How?

After a wide-ranging career in the military, aerospace/aviation, and energy sectors (connect with me on LinkedIn if you’re curious), I decided to study to become a teacher. I felt that was the best way for me to have a positive impact on the future. Understanding the role of science in society has never been more important, as explained in this video from NSTA.

“If you can’t explain something simply, you don’t understand it.”

- Richard Feynman

Feynman returned to teaching freshmen after winning the Nobel Prize as the father of quantum electrodynamics. His words have inspired me and resonated with me. I believe the best teaching method is whatever works for the student in front of me. If the same thing worked for everyone, this wouldn’t be nearly as much fun! In this short video, Feynman explains more eloquently than I ever could.

I have worked in a large and diverse suburban public school and at a prestigious private religious school in Chicago, and have enjoyed working with students from a diverse range of backgrounds. I have taught a wide range of courses including AP Physics (all of them), AP Environmental Science, AP Bio, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. In addition to science, my Professional Educator’s License also includes endorsements for the following high school subjects: History, Math, Business/Marketing, and Computers.

Coming Soon… Video Content

It’s been a plan of mine for a while to create some top-notch video content for high school students. I haven’t yet, because there is so much good stuff already out there. While I am cooking up my own batch, here’s a list of my recommended YouTube channels by subject:

  • AP Bio - the wonderful Paul Andersen from Bozeman Science (pictured with me at NSTA) sets the gold standard for free science education content: https://www.bozemanscience.com/ap-biology

  • AP Physics - Jonathon Thomas-Palmer (aka Mr. P) does some great stuff which you can find here https://www.flippingphysics.com. He could use some new students, as Billy, Bobby, and Bo are starting to look old. (JK, Jonathon)

  • AP Environmental - Gotta go with Jordan Dischinger-Smedes and APES vs. Everybody. No nonsense, just the facts.

  • AP Chem - There are several options, but start with The Organic Chemistry Tutor.

… we are not the same person.
